What about the latest trial "craze"?

I don't generally like to get into politics, religion or, well you get what I'm saying.  I do have to comment on the latest "big" trial, although I am hard pressed to actually use the word "trial" ... it's more like a three-ring circus.  Not mentioning any names, states or other facts because by now, in the few seconds it has taken you to read this far, you already know that of which I speak (unless you have been stranded in a boat, with a Bengel Tiger floating around in the Pacific, oh wait that was Pi).  And if you have no idea who Pi is, please note, an excellent movie (The Life of Pi)!  Quite an extraordinary tale, quite unbelievable, you become transfixed while watching it ... sorry I'm talking about the movie still ... could have been the trial though.

I take pride in being an American.  We have so much to be thankful for, including our system of justice, which most of the time works and works well.  Why then are so many of us glued to a case that is really nothing more than a pretty bad orchestration of "justice" not really working? Hmm, maybe we are glued to it because it is justice in a raw, ugly form but still, justice.  Justice because in this instance, there is still a trial being held and the accused is still being granted an opportunity to be defended and have her story told.  Justice does have a high price, regardless of how we feel about it being misused we are each still fortunate to know that it still exists in this great country of ours.

Presumed innocent until otherwise but remember the individual in question in this particular sensationalized event, has already pled guilty.  The defense has argued on behalf of their client, who admitted to the brutal slaying of an ex-boyfriend that she was the victim of "abuse".  Nope, don't think so, know too many people who have and her fairytale, oops I mean "confession",  just doesn't realistically "fit" into an abuse situation.  The thing I am having trouble with, well one thing among many in this particular situation, is why didn't the defense have their client plead insanity?  Yes, I'm serious.  Anyone else care to chime in?  Because the defendant is a seriously ill person.

And now, yet another witness to be called in the rebuttal case, (or is this the surebuttal case -- I forget where we are in this, its been months of trying to sort through so much) a neuropsychologist ... Okay, apparently they couldn't find an neurologist, an MD, or better yet an MD who works in a large city in an emergency department, who routinely deals with victims who have been shot in the head and who would more than likely get on the stand and say "no ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I agree with the ME who was on the stand again last week, there is no way the victim in this case made a deliberate motion after being shot and having a bullet (even a small caliber bullet) pass through his frontal lobe and into his cheek, let alone have the ability to chase someone 15 feet or more."??  Seriously?!!  End of story.  Hopefully this last witness won't sit on the stand for weeks of agonizing testimony like so many of the others.

This will all be over, very soon and more importantly the victim in this case will receive JUSTICE.

Con Artist Continued

Have spent countless hours researching "Con Artists"  and how they seem to seep into our society.  They are cunning and relentless in their pursuit of cheating people, innocent people out of their finances, in some cases their life savings, damaging the victims physical well being (health) and the emotional damage they imprint on their victims (which in some cases is endless).  Seemingly they get away with much because too many of their victims are too frightened to come forward and admit that they were victims because they might feel "foolish" and "ashamed", neither of which they should be.  This situation is sad to say the least, goes mostly unpunished legally because of the victims reluctance to come forward.  These people need to be identified and remember they have inflicted a personal injustice to you.  Please respond if you have been in such a situation.  I would like to hear your input and gain further knowledge of these situations.

Continuing search for PI Internship Opportunities

Currently seeking and internship program in FL or PA so that I can become a licensed PI.  I have many skills and experiences which would make me a great candidate for an internship.    Thank you!!

Con Artists

Have any of you ever been the victim of a con artist?  Many times these crimes go unreported for numerous reasons.  The sad outcome is that the victim of the crime is often left feeling confused, upset and financially ruined.  Further information to be posted so stay tuned.

Surveillance

I have often wondered how to go undetected and fortunately have the ability to melt into the background!  I suppose this will come in handy if, or rather, when I am called on by a prospective client to provide them with surveillance.  The tools today are, well, progressive to say the least.  Even tools that ten years ago would have been considered higher end technology and possibly even too expensive are in some instances today very affordable (micro sized video and digital camera's, bugging devices, tracking devices, to name a few).  I even get a catalogue from a supplier who provides all kinds of interesting tools.  I will have to look for the name of the vendor and will post their URL.  Happy tracking!

Specific research using a blog site

The Boston University course Certified Professional Investigator requires that the student perform a number of individual assignments.  In completing some of the requirements of the Internet Research module I found that http://www.bloggapedia.com/blog_search.php?q=crime&x=0&y=0 is a good efficient way to search blogs.  From this example I queried on the word crime.  You can register for free for this site.  There are a multitude of different ways to search on this blog site.  A website similar to bloggapedia but more specific to Private Investigation research is http://www.criminaljusticeusa.com/blog/2009/private-eye-reading-the-top-50-detective-blogs/.   This particular site is interesting in that it claims to have blogs specifically written by PIs.  Check it out!

Using various techniques and tools for searching

There are additional blogsites which may prove to be invaluable in researching particular subjects, historical information, and other crime related queries.  One of these blogs, which I found interesting is http://investigation.discovery.com/blogs/blog-community/crime-links.html . I found that this website is very useful.  In addition to websites it is important to learn the value of semantics and syntax uses in search engines.  Using appropriate query syntax can greatly improve the value of information returned and in addition can eliminate websites that are not useful.  For example if you want to search for a title in Google you would use the syntax intitle:Crime blogs and likewise you could use "Crime blogs" as your search criteria.
Using http://www.laurajames.com/clews/ for example and searching for "unsolved murder" resolves to 39 hits found on the this particular website.  Another great resource I have found for culling down to a more granular level when researching is http://www.metafilter.com/.   Metafilter works basically the same way as the previous example provided.  A concise source which introduces search engine specific syntax requirements can be found on http://www.utm.edu/departments/acadpro/library/information_pages/syntax.html.  Happy hunting! and if you find (which I know you will) other helpful websites please share!

Just one of many crime blogs worth following....

In the process of researching and locating blogs for this site I found a very interesting crime blog that is literally chock full of information.  This site is worthy of adding to your favorite blog sites if you are a crime buff.  The site is informative, interesting and broken out into several different categories (look at the right hand side which includes topics such as; This day in crime history, Executions, Recent and Upcoming Notable Trials, Coalition of Crime Bloggers, etc.)  While at it take a few minutes to link to www.crimejunkies.com and www.crimenews2000.com just two of the many notable links found on the mylifeofcrime blogspot which can be found at mylifeofcrime.wordpress.com.  Crimenews2000 is up-to-date and covers several cases simultaneously and is a victims advocacy website.  Each story contains links to similar cases.

Areas of Interest

As an aspiring PI I have thought about my areas of interests and at the top of that list would be unsolved crimes, especially homicides and missing persons.  This link http://www.unlovedcrimes.com/ is a great resource for researching unsolved homicides.
For my research I am also interested in unsolved crimes/homicides in the State of Florida and using http://www.fugitivehunter.org/unsolved.html is a good starting point as it is broken out by state.
http://www.tampagov.net/dept_POLICE/information_resources/Investigations/unsolved_homicides/ this site is specific to Tampa, Florida related unsolved homicides.
It is imperative as an investigator to build an electronic library of searchable data which can be an invaluable asset in research.  Another must have tool is the www.delicious.com a free tool which allows the user to create unique tags and the ability to bookmark electronic data, this tool is invaluable to anyone who uses the Internet frequently.  I wish this tool had been available to me when I was a student, it would have undoubtedly prevented a great deal of aggravation.
There are a multitude of excellent tools available on the Internet and the list grows daily.  In doing my research I came across some new search engines which I had not been aware of previously; culi.com, viewzi.com, rollyo.com are just three of many.
